On paper, the Buick seems to have implemented the rice-rocket for the treatment of the popular Regal to make the new GS models. It took a small, 2.0-liter four-cylinder and turbocharged and intercooled the bejeebers out of it to produce 270 horsepower and even hairier 295 lb-ft of twist; ran in paving-stones sized front brake rotors (14.0 inches in diameter, 1, 2 inches thick) clamped by the impressive-looking four-piston Brembo calipers; starched up suspension with stiffer springs, anti-roll bars, and (adjusted) Sachs shocks, and dress up the exterior with a more aggressive fascias, rocker panel extensions, and spoiler.
Little-drive front suspension GS ‘OPC Opel shared with AWD, and GS is set for North American road surface scabrous. In connection with the Turbo Regal, front and rear spring rates and rear anti-roll bar increased stiffness by 20 percent. Front bar carry over, but the geometry of attachment to the Struts Hiper provide some increase in the effective rate. Hard Buick Interactive Control System is standard on the GS, and three-mode suspension is approximately the same setting with the top two in IDCs optional Turbo, plus a tight GS mode that also alter the steering assist and ultimately will increase the shift speed and firmness of a six-speed automatic when arrived in mid-2012. Base GS is equipped with what looks like Turbo 245/40R19 all-season Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires (compound and unique construction) mounted on special wheels GS. Enthusiasts will want to choose to rubber 255/35ZR20 Pirelli PZero summer. GM claims they are good for the 0.90g-plus cornering (compared with 0.84 for SUN upper 19s and 0.82 for the Turbo).
Styling tweaks inside and outside are equally restrained. A gulp of air front fascia more deeply through the larger openings; back lets it out through the exhaust outlet is more prominent; rocker panel extensions accentuate simple suspension lowered, and there are satin chrome trim and a small lip spoiler on the decklid. The latter contributes to -0.11 with a coefficient of lift, resulting in modest net downforce while the overall drag coefficient only increased from .335 to .340. Inside are well supported sport leather seats, a leather-wrapped, flat-bottom sport steering wheel; metal sport pedals; black piano black trim, and lighting measure that switches from blue to white when moving GS mode. Many options come standard on the Regal GS $ 35,310, such as stereo Harmon / Kardon speakers and nine, park-assist sensing, and rear side airbags. Options only paint colors, navigation, sunroof, and the Dubs. In all, GS price range tops out at $ 39K.
With the Regal GS, Buick is serving up gourmet nouvelle assist refinement and performance. But the big name chefs in the street in the Acura and Audi to sell their established to please people (TSX V-6 and A4 Quattro) for the same price. Perhaps the proof of the pudding will be in testing.
