2012 Bentley Continental GT Price, Review, Specs, what car reviews, After essentially reinventing Bentley after its 2003 model year introduction, the automaker’s Continental GT has become something of an icon among high-end super luxury coupes. As such, Bentley chose the ever-popular “evolution over revolution” mantra for the redesigned 2012 Bentley Continental GT – with one twist: A nod to ever-stricter emissions standards.

Bentley says that it will begin offering its four-seat coupe with a new 4.0-liter V8 engine, which will chop the current W12 model’s CO2 emissions by a whopping 40 percent.

Built for long passages, with a sturdy sea-keeping fiberglass hull, the Hatteras offers unparalleled engineering, meticulous craftsmanship and immense power. Its staterooms feature exquisite wood cabinetry, double bullnose moldings, and polished natural stone countertops. The main salon is equipped with plasma video screens and multi-channel surround sound for entertainment, while the pilot house features state-of-the art digital electronics for monitoring systems and navigation. And under the stern deck, there are twin 16-cylinder turbo diesel powerplants generating 2,400 horsepower each. It’s enough propulsion to move the 270,000-pound yacht through the water at speeds approaching 30 mph.

Bentley has been sparse on details about the new V8, but it says that the high-output engine will “deliver all the exhilarating power and torque synonymous with the marque”.

For Bentley traditionalists, however, the W12 returns, boasting 6.0 liters, twin turbochargers and a boost to 567 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque. Lighter than the outgoing model thanks to some material changes throughout, the revised W12 sprints to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

It sends power to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission capable of delivering gear-skipping double downshifts for improved response.

The Continental GT’s all-wheel-drive system has also been revised. Sending power to an increased width track, the system now splits 40 percent of the power to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear to reduce understeer. New 20 and 21-inch alloy wheels are available.

Outside, the Continental GT gains new jeweled headlamps with LED running lights, a revised front grille and some tweaking to the outgoing car’s bodylines. The body is heavily revised from before despite a similar appearance.

The interior, on the other hand, is now softer and more inviting. The primary controls, instrumentation and dash vents have not moved, but they are now more cleanly integrated into the rich woods and soft hides around them. Most now wear bright metal bezels. A new eight-inch touchscreen display powered by VW-sourced architecture highlights the center console (it couldn’t come soon enough – the outgoing unit was one of the most dated facets of the old car). The steering wheel is freshened and the pedals resculpted. There’s even significant news with the seats. Last year’s behemoths have been replaced with thinner and lighter “cobra-design” seats, with the seat belt anchors affixed to the chassis instead of the seats.

The audio systems feature the latest wide frequency Balance Mode Radiator speakers as standard, as well as Dirac Dimensions DSP for exceptional sound reproduction (Naim for Bentley premium audio).
