2012 GMC Sierra 1500 Price, Review, Specs

2012 GMC Sierra 1500 Price, Review, Specs, what car reviews, The Sierra 1500 is GMC’s half-ton full-size pickup that was redesigned for 2007. Available in Regular Cab, Extended Cab, and Crew Cab versions with a choice of three different box sizes: 5 feet 8 inches, 6 feet 6 inches and 8 feet, the next-generation Sierra is built on an all-new platform for a smoother ride and more responsive handling. The new design features a unique hood, grille, bumper, front fenders, headlights, taillights and a more steeply raked windshield. Extended Cab versions feature rear access doors that open 170 degrees for better access. Most GMC Sierras come standard with the OnStar advanced communication system.

The GMC Sierra 1500 offers fuel economy, capability and performance in a broad lineup that includes everything from job-ready Work Truck to the well-appointed Denali. It is available in a wide array of bed sizes, wheelbases, drive types and cab sizes, and trim levels.

There are four engine sizes to choose from: 4.3-liter V6, 4.8-liter V8, 5.3-liter V8 and 6.2-liter V8; and two transmissions: a four-speed automatic and a six-speed automatic. Properly equipped, the Sierra 1500 can provide a payload capacity of up to 1937 lbs and tow up to 10,700 lbs. A wide variety of suspension, towing, entertainment, comfort and convenience packages are available.

For 2012, Hill Start Assist and trailer sway control are now standard on all trims, and SLE and SLT have a new standard chrome grille surround with chrome horizontal bars.

Performance
With that kind of horsepower, both the GMC Sierra 1500 and the average truck are legitimate speedsters.

Handling
With their similar turning circles, the average truck and the GMC Sierra 1500 most definitely handle roughly the same into and out of tight spots.

Drivetrain
The Sierra 1500′s engine isn’t much more sizeable than the typical truck’s.

Utility
There’s no clear winner between the average truck and the GMC Sierra 1500 as far as transporting cargo. The GMC Sierra 1500 will most certainly prove handier than the average truck for those of you with frequent child-cargo. The average truck outpulls the Sierra 1500 by a big margin.

Convenience
You will have to visit your friendly gas station more often with the GMC Sierra 1500 than with the average truck.

Comfort
While the front cabin in the Sierra 1500 offers a bit more head room than the typical truck, there really isn’t much of a difference. The ampler interior dimensions of the Sierra 1500 make it considerably roomier for your passengers than the average truck.

Dimensions
The GMC Sierra 1500′s tank is roughly the same size as the average truck’s, though the average truck’s is somewhat larger. The average truck and the GMC Sierra 1500 compete for the same parking spaces. The GMC Sierra 1500′s longer wheelbase will result in a smoother, more stable ride; however, the typical truck may give a more maneuverable feel in daily traffic.

Mitsubishi Galant Price, Review, Specs

Mitsubishi Galant Price, Review, Specs, what car reviews, In the 1980s the Mitsubishi Galant was known for its sporty dynamic in both styling and ride. Unfortunately, for most of the past two decades, the Galant has spiraled downward. The current-generation Galant was introduced in 2004, and perhaps the Galant misplaced the memo about it being 2012, because styling hasn’t progressed much since then.

Considering that we’re now on our third Toyota Camry since the current Galant was introduced, it’s not surprising that Mitsubishi’s delay in updating the Galant’s style has translated into low sales figures, and it’s not on many shopping lists these days. A meek 2.4-liter inline-4 engine offers a back-of-the-pack 160 horsepower, and its ancient four-speed automatic transmission isn’t helping the Galant’s case either

Sassy Styling, Both Inside and Out

With its crisp, neatly folded exterior sheetmetal and pleasing proportions, the handsome 2011 Mitsubishi Galant mid-size luxury sports sedan certainly stands apart from other vehicles in its class.

Notable in its good-looking design is its prominent front fascia which features a very bold-looking silver painted mesh grille. Squared-off headlights that contain a smaller pair of lamps stacked one on top of the other at the outer edges are also a styling tour de force. The prominent creases along the hood give the design a brawny look. Without question, the front end styling of this sedan is truly unlike any other.

A futuristic-looking yet elegant “cat’s eye” taillight design and a sporty trunk lid-mounted lip spoiler (the latter element included on the Galant SE with Leather package) can’t help but please the discerning eye.

Front and center inside the Galant’s warm-looking interior is the tall center console waterfall that is done up in a handsome silver finish, its controls a thoughtful blend of knobs and buttons that never overwhelm the senses both visually and in functionality. Perched atop the center stack in the Galant SE is a very intuitive, 7-in. touch-screen DVD-based navigation system; a convenient rear backup camera system is also included. A chrome shift lever gate and thin strips of silver-colored trim that line the gauge faces and lay horizontally across the dashboard top off a rich-looking interior design deserving of a vehicle that should cost thousands of dollars more than the Galant’s very attainable price point.

Fuel-Efficient 2.4-Liter Engine

All 2011 Mitsubishi Galant models are powered by a venerable 2.4-liter, 16-valve SOHC inline-4-cylinder engine that features Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) for improved power production, fuel economy and lower emissions. This engine produces 160 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 157 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. A variation of this powerplant that has been certified as a Partial Zero-Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) is available for sale in California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Vermont and produces slightly less horsepower with a rating of 155 bhp. A 4-speed Sportronic® automatic transmission that gives the driver the option of manually shifting gears when desired is standard equipment.

This quiet and efficient powertrain not only produces outstanding fuel economy with a highway rating of 30 mpg but also saves its owner additional money at the pump as this engine runs on regular-grade unleaded fuel.

Chassis: Smooth Operator

Thanks to the Galant’s rigid chassis and ideally-placed sound insulation, occupants are treated to a hushed ride from a well-engineered platform that keeps sound intrusion to a minimum. Thoughtful design can also be found in the car’s independent suspension – a MacPherson strut configuration with coil springs that reside in a sub-frame up front and a low-mount multi-link setup in the rear of the vehicle – allowing for supple suspension damping that soaks up road irregularities with aplomb along with providing responsive handling.

2012 Buick LaCrosse Price, Review, Specs

2012 Buick LaCrosse Price, Review, Specs, what car reviews, For much of the last decade, Buick’s sedans held little appeal beyond those consumers still nostalgic about the traditions of this General Motors nameplate. But two years ago, Buick introduced its redesigned — and much improved — LaCrosse. Boasting modern styling, an elegant interior and impressive driving dynamics, the LaCrosse quickly became one of our more favored entry-level luxury sedans.

The 2012 Buick LaCrosse gets even better thanks to a new hybrid powertrain. Serving as the LaCrosse’s entry-level model (last year’s base four-cylinder has been discontinued), the “eAssist” combines a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a mild hybrid system to boost fuel economy to 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.

Aside from basic variations in trim level, the interior of the 2012 LaCrosse stays the course, meaning you’ll find an elegant cabin with sweeping lines and rich surfaces, all set off by the generous use of LED accent lighting. The serene, roomy cabin is filled with useful features and amusing toys ranging from a rearview camera to a dual-screen video entertainment system. In fact, the only significant complaints we have are the small trunk and reduced visibility caused by thick roof pillars.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

For 2012, Buick has revamped the LaCrosse model lineup, replacing last year’s three relatively uncomplicated trim levels with no fewer than seven different variants.

Base models come nicely equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, full power accessories, dual-zone automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, a power driver seat and partial-power front passenger seat, split-folding rear seatbacks, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, OnStar, Bluetooth, and a seven-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface. Next step up would be the Convenience model (1SD), which adds a power lumbar adjustment for the driver seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and remote ignition.

Spring for the Leather model and you get foglamps, heated mirrors with built-in turn signal repeaters, leather upholstery, heated front seats and a full power front passenger seat. The Premium 1 version adds rear parking assist, an auto-dimming driver-side mirror and driver seat memory settings. The Premium 2 (1SP) ups the ante with the 3.6-liter V6, keyless ignition/entry, perforated leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated leather- and wood-trimmed steering wheel and a power rear window sunshade. A Premium 3 model includes 18-inch chromed alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a 120-volt household-style power outlet and an 11-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2012 Buick LaCrosse is offered with one of two new engines. For buyers interested in maximizing miles per gallon there’s the new eAssist mild hybrid powertrain, which pairs a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an 11-kilowatt electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. This setup sends 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels by way of a six-speed automatic transmission. Combined with a number of clever aerodynamic improvements like automatically controlled shutters in the front grille, this powertrain results in impressive EPA estimates of 25 mpg city/ 36 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined.

Buyers in search of additional thrust can opt for a new, more powerful version of last year’s 3.6-liter V6 that now puts out 303 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic is the only transmission offered here, but buyers do have a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Despite the added power for 2012, fuel economy numbers remain virtually unchanged at 17 mpg city/27 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and 16/26/20 with all-wheel drive.

Safety

The 2012 Buick LaCrosse’s list of standard safety features includes antilock disc brakes with brake assist, stability and traction control, front-seat side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and the OnStar telematics system. Rear-seat side-impact airbags and a blind-spot alert system are available as options. In Edmunds brake testing, a LaCrosse came to a stop from 60 mph in 127 feet — a bit longer than average.

Interior Design and Special Features

Slide behind the steering wheel of the 2012 Buick LaCrosse and you’ll find yourself surrounded by an interior made up of graceful curves and upscale materials. Even after the sun sets, the cabin’s flowing lines are emphasized by soft blue ambient lighting that adds a classy touch.

If there’s a weakness in this artful design, it’s that the controls aren’t quite as straightforward and intuitive as some traditional Buick buyers might like. Just the same, we think the abundance of buttons and knobs used to control the audio, climate control and navigation systems is something most folks should eventually get used to.

The LaCrosse’s trunk is on the small side, however, with just 13.3 cubic feet of cargo room. Space is even tighter in models equipped with the new eAssist powertrain, where the hybrid battery pack reduces capacity to less than 11 cubic feet. A smallish opening can also make loading larger items problematic.

Driving Impressions

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the 2012 Buick LaCrosse is the driving experience. The steering feels precise, and handling is significantly better than you’d expect without sacrificing the plush ride quality one expects of a luxury sedan.

The additional horsepower that the engineers have wrung out of the V6 makes this engine even more attractive. More importantly, the new eAssist hybrid powertrain is much better suited to this application than the old four-cylinder, providing decent acceleration, very respectable fuel economy and highly refined operation.

2012 Dodge Journey Price, Review, Specs

2012 Dodge Journey Price, Review, Specs, what car reviews, The 2012 Dodge Journey benefits from significant upgrades. The Journey is a midsize sport-utility that offers the smoother ride and better fuel economy of a car with the cargo space and roominess of an SUV. It seats five or seven, depending on model.

The 2012 Dodge Journey features a new V6 engine, a much more upscale interior, added sound deadener, and revised suspension tuning. Inside, the 2012 Journey gets Dodge’s latest infotainment system, which is called UConnect Touch. Exterior styling is tweaked for 2012 as well, with new front and rear fascias, a revised grille, and LED taillights.

The Dodge Journey uses a lightweight unitbody structure similar to that used by cars instead of a body-on-frame truck chassis. It’s considered a crossover vehicle because it straddles the line between car and SUV. The Journey is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive for superior traction and confidence in bad weather.

The new V6 for the 2012 Dodge Journey is a modern 3.6-liter engine that replaces an older 3.5-liter engine. The new 3.6-liter engine has plenty of power but is ill-matched to the 6-speed automatic transmission, making it feel less powerful than it actually is.

The 2012 Journey comes standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine of 173 horsepower. We found the four-cylinder engine is rough and noisy and offers too little power for a vehicle of this size.

Interior

The new interior design and materials give it one of the nicest cockpits in the class. It comes standard with seating for five, with a two-passenger third row optional.

The hard plastic surfaces of previous Dodge products are replaced with rich soft-touch surfaces in an attractive layout for 2012. The dashtop, door panels, armrests and center console are all soft to the touch. Added sound-deadening material makes it quieter underway. The look, feel and calm places the Journey at or near the top of the class for interior quality. The same couldn’t be said last year.

The center stack is completely redesigned for 2012 with three low-set knobs surrounded by several buttons. The climate controls are arrayed around the center knob, and they’re easy enough to use.

The infotainment system choices are all new for 2012. Instead of MyGIG, it’s now called UConnect Touch and it’s offered in four varieties. The base version has a 4.3-inch touchscreen and a standard audio input jack and USB port; it’s offered with or without Sirius satellite radio. The next step up comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen and a 30-gigabyte hard drive that can hold up to 6700 song files. There is also a premium version of this unit that adds Bluetooth streaming audio, voice command, a Garmin navigation system with Sirius Travel Link, and pre-programmed hands-free texting responses. We’ve had limited exposure to the new system but it works fairly well. Given Garmin’s reach, more people should be familiar with the navigation system, but we think it looks cartoonish. We also like the idea of hands-free texting.

Lineup

The 2011 Dodge Journey is offered in five trim levels: Express, Mainstreet, R/T, Crew, and Lux. The Express is only available with front-wheel drive and the 173-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission with Dodge’s AutoStick manual shiftgate. The other 2011 Journey models have a new 3.6-liter V6 with 283 horsepower, fitted to a 6-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick and are offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (AWD).

Driving Impression

The Dodge Journey is nondescript when it comes to road manners, though suspension changes for 2011 make it more controlled and a bit sportier. Those changes include stiffer springs and shocks, new lower rolling resistance tires with more grip, a retuned steering gear and stiffer steering mechanism, and modified rear suspension geometry.

The result is a ride that is generally good, with little pounding over bumps. The head sway that is associated with a high seating position is also minimal. Even with the available 19-inch wheels, the Journey does a good job of ironing out most jolts. But there are plenty of midsize crossovers and SUVs with similar ride characteristics.

2012 Kia Sorento Price, Review, Specs

2012 Kia Sorento Price, Review, Specs, what car reviews, Kia will make a new direct-injected 2.4-liter engine available in its Sorento crossover for the 2012 model year. “The new engine is almost certainly going to boost gas mileage on the Sorento,” writes USA Today. The Sorento’s current 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine already gets an EPA-rated 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway in two-wheel drive models and 21/27 mpg city/highway in four-wheel drive models, which are both high for an affordable midsize SUV. Kia says that it will also give its biggest SUV the company’s new UVO hands-free infotainment system, and a manual transmission will now be available. The engine’s new direct injection system will up its horsepower from 175 to 200, according to Autoblog, who says that “with those new features, the big Kia crossover can really dance with the big guns from the likes of Ford.”

However, the changes for 2012 aren’t all for the better. While a third row of seats came standard on LX V6 models, it will now be an option. Though 2012 models are already being sold at dealerships, Kia hasn’t posted much information about the next model year on their website, which is still touting 2011 models. This means that until more information is available, we won’t know how much it will cost to upgrade to the UVO entertainment system, the new direct-injected engine, or the third row of seats. As soon as we hear more about pricing or other news, we’ll post it in our review of the Kia Sorento.

The Sorento’s dynamic excellence extends beyond the powertrain. The steering is very well done. The wood-and-leather steering wheel in the SX model is thick, pleasing to hold, and features thumb rests in the 10 and 2 positions. The hydraulic steering is calibrated to provide consistent, linear response throughout the range of motion, though at lower speeds some might prefer something a bit lighter in feel. In any case, this setup is far superior to the electric steering systems in other Kias, and we will lament its eventual passing in the quest for incremental gains in fuel economy.

The Sorento’s brake pedal provides quick response to input and features excellent feel, allowing the driver to fine-tune pressure and bring the Sorento to a smooth, drama-free stop every time. The pedal went a bit soft after several miles of switchback roads, but even when the pads were heated up on a warm day, braking remained faithful enough to execute a panic stop.

2012 Lotus Evora Price, Review, Specs

2012 Lotus Evora Price, Review, Specs, what car reviews, The Evora is a new mid-engine sports car from Lotus that offers a 2+2 option to add a level of practicality to the superb handling, ride and performance. The Lotus Evora features a swept-forward cabin design and an integrated rear spoiler that is not only functional but also adds to the styling of the car. The elegant interior is designed to enhance both driver and passenger comfort with leather trimmed Recaro sport seats and a flat-bottomed lightweight magnesium leather-trimmed steering wheel.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2011 Lotus Evora is a four-seat sports car that is offered in base and Evora S trim levels.

Standard equipment includes cast-aluminum wheels, bi-xenon headlights, heated exterior mirrors, air-conditioning, leather-upholstered front seats, cloth-upholstered rear seats, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, power windows, a leather-wrapped gearshift knob and handbrake, a trip computer and a CD/MP3 player with iPod integration and auxiliary audio jack.

There are three main option groups available. The Premium package adds accent lighting, a center armrest, heated front seats, premium floor mats and leather trim throughout the cabin. The Sport package features selectable sport modes, enhanced throttle response, a higher rpm limit, a rear underbody diffuser, titanium exhaust tips and cross-drilled brake rotors with black-painted calipers. The Technology package includes cruise control, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth and an upgraded stereo with DVD playback, a 7-inch touchscreen display, navigation and a USB port. A SuedeTex option adds faux suede interior trim elements.

Stand-alone options include a sports ratio gearbox, a rearview camera, power-folding mirrors, various wheel options, clear paint protection film and a premium audio system. Buyers can also opt to delete the rear seats in favor of a rear parcel area.

The Evora S receives more power thanks to its supercharged engine, and the powertrain also features an exhaust bypass valve that opens in Sport mode, a heavy-duty clutch and a close-ratio transmission. Also included are all the items from the Sport package along with a sportier suspension tune and a more aggressive rear aero diffuser.

Lotus Evora

Powertrains and Performance
The 2011 Lotus Evora is powered by a mid-mounted 3.5-liter Toyota V6 that produces 276 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The only standard transmission is a traditional six-speed manual, with a push-button six-speed automatic with shift paddles available as an option. The Evora S gains a supercharger and increases power output to 345 hp and 295 lb-ft or torque.

Lotus estimates the 0-60-mph run at around 4.9 seconds for the base Evora, with a stated top speed of 162 mph. The Evora S should hit 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and top out at 172 mph. Just as impressive as the performance numbers is the fuel efficiency; the Evora is expected to achieve 17 mpg city/27 mpg highway for the standard manual, while the sport gearbox should get 1 mpg more in the city.

Safety
The 2010 Lotus Evora is noticeably sparse when it comes to safety equipment. Antilock brakes and traction/stability control are included, but no type of side airbags are available.

Interior Design and Special Features
The Evora’s interior is quite a departure from the hard-core sports cars in the Lotus lineup, sporting a modern cockpit with rich leather surfaces, carpeting and significantly more creature comforts than what’s offered in the Elise and Exige. The relatively few knobs and buttons are within easy reach and are elegantly styled and placed.

Entry and exit from the front seats are much more civilized than in the Elise or Exige, thanks to a shorter and narrower side sill and larger door openings. Once seated, there is significantly more space up front — enough to comfortably accommodate 6-foot-plus adults. Unfortunately, though, the front wheelwell intrudes on foot space. As a result, the clutch pedal is shifted an inch or so to the right, which can be awkward for some drivers. We had bigger issues with the lack of a functional dead pedal, however. A small ledge that can only fit a few toes is all that is provided, and its placement is painfully uncomfortable.

The rear seats don’t fare any better, and are really no more than an upholstered package shelf with seatbelts. Rear space is almost nonexistent, and may even be uncomfortable for small children. In a pinch, these seats might come in handy, but we’d probably opt for the rear-seat delete. Rear visibility is laughable, but fortunately, a rearview camera is available as an option. As for the trunk, Lotus claims the Evora can hold up to 5.7 cubic feet but its narrow shape drastically limits what you can store back there. Strangely enough, the Elise’s trunk, which can hold only 4.0 cubes, more easily accommodates bulkier items because of its wider shape.

Driving Impressions
The 2011 Lotus Evora is most at home on tight, twisting roads. Like its smaller Elise and Exige cousins, the Evora knifes through turns with uncommon precision and otherworldly levels of grip. Unlike the Elise, however, the Evora provides a relatively serene cabin with few squeaks and rattles, plenty of sound insulation and a suspension that reduces pothole effects to “normal” car standards.

Power is plentiful throughout the rev range and the transmission features well-spaced gears to make the most of the V6′s output. Steering feel is as good as it gets for any car, and the power steering makes maneuvering in tight spots effortless.

Electronic features include Bluetooth, a nine-speaker sound system (with a CD player, HD radio and an auxiliary audio jack), a navigation system, voice controls and the iDrive electronics interface. The convertible has a power soft top with a glass rear window that can be raised and lowered independently, along with heat-reflective leather upholstery.

Options include the Driver Assistance Package that adds side- and top-view cameras, blind spot detection, a head-up display, lane departure warning and automatic high beams. The Luxury Seating package adds a power rear sunshade and ventilated front seat with adjustable bolsters and a massage feature. The Cold Weather package mixes it up with heated front seats (also available as a stand-alone option), a heated steering wheel and a trunk pass-through ski bag. The Premium Sound package adds a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system with an iPod/USB audio interface and satellite radio.

Other options include 20-inch wheels, LED headlights, active steering, active roll stabilization, an infrared night vision display, BMW Apps enhanced smartphone integration, extended leather upholstery and enhanced interior trim materials.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2012 BMW 650i is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 generating 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but “xDrive” all-wheel drive is optional. An eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control is standard, and a six-speed manual is optional on rear-drive cars. The start/stop feature is not included. In Edmunds performance testing, we timed an automatic-equipped 650i convertible from zero to 60 mph in a quick 4.9 seconds. EPA-estimated fuel economy for an automatic-equipped convertible stands at 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined. Opting for the manual drops those to 15/22/17.
Safety

Standard safety equipment includes four-wheel antilock brakes with advanced standby and drying features, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, front knee airbags, active head restraints and BMW Assist. Pop-up roll bars also come standard on the convertible. In Edmunds brake testing, the 650i convertible stopped from 60 mph in 111 feet, an impressive halt for a 4,200-pound car.

Interior Design and Special Features

It’s not as elegant as the Jaguar XK’s streamlined design, but the 2012 BMW 6 Series interior offers top-shelf materials and craftsmanship in a fitting, cockpit-centric design. Depending on your preference, the center console’s high hip line may instill a sense of security or slight claustrophobia. Improvements to successive generations of iDrive make it one of the most intuitive interfaces for controlling phone, navigation and audio functions. The latest upgrade, featuring a 10.2-inch color display, makes cycling through essential menus even easier.

The 6 Series excels at accommodating two passengers, but the rear seat is only suitable for adults on short trips to the restaurant or driving range. Trunk space measures a relatively enormous 12.3 cubic feet in the convertible (10.6 with the top down) and both cars have a pass-through to accommodate longer items. The convertible’s heated rear window retracts independently of the soft top, doubling as a wind deflector when the top is dropped. Lowering the soft top takes about 20 seconds; raising it takes just a few seconds longer.

Driving Impressions

Behind the wheel, no one will mistake the 2012 BMW 6 Series for a 3 Series. The 6 makes few sporting pretensions, and while we wouldn’t call it athletic, it’s also not at all wayward or uncoordinated. The optional Active Roll Stabilization system keeps the brawny coupe composed through corners and helps it change direction quicker than its 2-ton heft would suggest. The steering changes weight depending on the driver-selected dynamic mode (such as Normal or Sport), but in all forms, it remains reasonably precise. Optional Active Steering also uses rear-wheel steering for low-speed maneuverability and high-speed stability.

Where the 650i’s previous engine made its best power near its redline, the new twin-turbo V8 unleashes a seemingly endless flow of low-end grunt and properly competes with torque-rich engines in the Jaguar XK and Mercedes-Benz E550. The new 640i also performs quite well, however, and it’s definitely worth a drive to see if you really need that higher-numbered model.

2012 Lincoln MKT Price, Review, Specs

2012 Lincoln MKT Price, Review, Specs, what car reviews, The MKT is Lincoln’s entry in the full-size luxury crossover segment with three rows of seating and what Lincoln describes as the optimal blend of fuel economy, performance, technology and spaciousness. Larger than the MKX midsize crossover, the MKT design features Lincoln’s signature split waterfall grille, a beveled chamfer along the shoulder line, a cantrail that frames the greenhouse and full-width horizontal taillights. Offered in either 6- or 7-passenger configurations, a second-row 60/40 split folding bench seat with heated outboard seating positions is standard. Optional power “fold and tumble” second-row bucket seats include heating, cooling and power lumbar adjustment and an available 5-quart refrigerator in the center console. A fixed glass Panoramic Vista Roof with power-assisted front and rear sunshades is standard and a Power Panoramic Vista roof is optional.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2012 Lincoln MKT is a crossover luxury SUV offered in two trim levels: MKT and MKT with EcoBoost.

Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, automatic and adaptive xenon headlights, keyless ignition/entry, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera and a power liftgate. Inside the cabin, you’ll find leather upholstery, eight-way heated and ventilated power front seats (includes four-way power lumbar), heated second-row seats (outboard only), power-adjustable pedals, driver memory settings, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, tri-zone automatic climate control, retractable second-row sunshades, a rear 110-volt power outlet and an 8-inch touchscreen that displays audio and climate controls. A 10-speaker audio system with a CD player, satellite radio and the Sync system that offers voice control for MP3 players and cell phones comprise the standard entertainment system.

The Elite package (EcoBoost only) adds a panoramic sunroof, a blind-spot warning system, power-folding third-row seats, a 14-speaker surround-sound audio system and a voice-operated navigation system with Sirius Travel Link. Other options include a dual-screen rear-entertainment system and sliding second-row captain’s chairs that are heated and ventilated (and that also drop seating capacity from seven to six). The MKT EcoBoost can be further equipped with 20-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, an automatic parallel-parking system and, when equipped with second-row rear captain’s chairs, a console with refrigerator.

Powertrains and Performance
Standard MKT models get a 3.7-liter V6 making 268 hp and 267 pound-feet of torque, connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift option using steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles. Estimated fuel economy is 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined.

The MKT EcoBoost receives a more muscular twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 making 355 hp and 350 lb-ft. A six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system are standard. Estimated EPA fuel economy is 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined. In Edmunds performance testing, the MKT EcoBoost accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, a swift result for this segment.
Safety

The 2012 Lincoln MKT comes standard with electronic stability control, antilock disc brakes, front seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags that cover all three rows.

The Collision Warning with Brake Support system comes as part of the optional adaptive cruise control. This system flashes a warning on the windshield when sensors detect slower-moving traffic ahead and then pre-charges the brake system to reduce braking distances for an ensuing panic stop. In a panic stop during Edmunds testing, the MKT slowed from 60 to zero in an acceptable distance of 127 feet.

Other useful safety features include a rearview camera, a blind spot monitor and a Cross Traffic Alert system. Sync also offers emergency crash notification that automatically dials 911 in the event of an airbag deployment. Parents will also want to note the MyKey feature, which allows restrictions on vehicle speed and audio volume for teen drivers.

Interior Design and Special Features
The MKT’s interior is available in six- or seven-passenger configurations, and either way offers handsome styling and upscale materials including leather upholstery and genuine wood trim. The optional six-passenger configuration trades the 60/40-split second-row bench for a pair of sliding captain’s chairs that increases legroom for third-row passengers. Add the second-row center console with refrigerator and headrest-mounted DVD screens and you’re traveling in limo-class luxury.

The standard two-passenger third row is not nearly as enjoyable a place to be, because the headroom is compromised by the sloping roof line. Buyers looking for maximum seating capacity should check the Buick Enclave, which offers room for up to eight passengers, or even the Ford Flex, which has enough room for 6-footers. The MKT offers up 76 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, which is competitive, though below average for a large luxury crossover.

Driving Impressions
As large luxury people movers go, the 2012 Lincoln MKT is a pleasure to drive. Steering feels reasonably responsive whether assisted by hydraulic or electric power steering, the latter found on the EcoBoost model. The suspension delivers the refined ride quality expected of a luxury vehicle and very respectable handling, although the MKT’s size and weight make it anything but sporting. The MKT EcoBoost V6 provides plenty of acceleration at virtually any speed, thanks in part to the six-speed automatic transmission’s smooth shifts.
